Conversation tips

Ministers are wise to think carefully about how they speak and act in conversation. Here's a helpful post with links to other pages on body language and other non-verbals.

Hi Russ, great to see you blogging, even though most of your stuff goes way over my head (which isn't hard I must say lol!) At the risk of sounding negative or making an unwanted comment, I must say that I found this link a little disturbing, particularly tip number 10: "Feign sincerity" which is one of the main problems I have with church. Just my obs. Some of the comments made against that entry are an interesting read too. Hope all's going well with your little family and with your study :) Wen xx

Hi Wendy,

Well spotted. I'd intended coming back to this post and expanding it, but never got around to it. I meant to add a comment about how we can learn a lot even though it's written from a very self-centred viewpoint.

For instance, while there's no room for feigned sincerity in God's family I find I don't express my sincere concern for the other person as well as I should. I have a bad habit of scanning the room for visitors, even though I'm genuinely interested in catching up with someone. That's something I need to un-learn. And ministers (and other Christians) are constantly responding to what people say with advice or a comment, rather than simply acknowledging that they heard the other person.

The way the article is written is tellingly sad. But what it reveals about how we can better communicate is helpful.

Hope your family's well too, Wendy. I'm looking forward to this reunion if we can all pull it off.

Best wishes,
Russell

Thanks Russell! And so glad to agree with you on your comments! I think what it comes down to for me is to experience church with people being real and genuine towards the way they regard God and me. I could go on and on about this subject but will restrain myself lol.

I hope we can get our reunion going too! Once i've finished my study i'll be finishing off the finer details of it!
